Horizontal fences can offer the same privacy as vertical but are often considered more modern and stylish. Some key differences are found in the framing. while the vertival needs additional 2x4s to mount its boards, the horizantal requires no additonal framing aside from the posts. This allows for clean lines in between your boards which is why gapping or spacing boards wider is more common in horizantal fencing.

Spacing

Here are examples of tight board spacing vs gapping the boards. Our standard is 1/4" gap, which is the tightest boards should be placed to allow for board swelling. But but we can make the gap any size larger than 1/4". You can save on materials and create interesting looks by gapping boards at the expense of privacy.  Common gaps go by board size (5 1/2") and are set at 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 of the board Horizantal fences are ideal for gapping because the lack of framing allows for clean lines between boards.

Style

Some common style of  horizantal fence are Standard, Woven, Shadowbox and Framed.

Shadowbox alternates pickets on each side of the rail giving the fence more depth to the eye.

Woven Fence is a play on a shadowbox fence. using trim pieces to give the effect of pickets weaving through the verticals.

Framed fences in horizantal style will add vertical boards on the ends of each panel and usually will match the top and bottom crosboards. This creates a picture frame effect with clean lines and also strengthens the overall structure.

Interested in building another smaller fence on top of your fence? Well this is pretty much that. Sounds silly but looks surprisingly good. The most common styles are lattice filled, but browse the  filled fence section and you can use any style from there as a topper. Or find a material you like and come up with your own unique design.

Material

For vertical fencing the two most common types of material used are wood or composite. Both offer unique benefits and make beautiful fences, but unfortunately you'll have to pick just one type for your main fill material.

Our standard wood fence is build with cedar picket boards. There is a reason the majority of picket fences are built with cedar,  it holds up remarkably well in the elements and has an attractive price point. Our standard cedar fences come with a coat of wood sealer for extra weatherproofing, and we offer the option too add clear coat polyurethane finish for additional protection and just a little shine. Two Lew Also offers picket fences built with hem /fir pickets which can be built cheaper for tighter budgets.

In composite, our standard fencing is trex brand. We will happily work with any product, but Trex is a cheap and reliable standard. One benefit of compsites is a wide array colors are available. Also no stian or sealer is required to protect the boards or get the color you want. Composite boards have the potential to last longer than traditional lumber and have minimal maintenance required. give them a good wash once in a while and they will look brand new again.
